DECEASED BRETHREN

Joseph Rostein was a member of Victoria-Columbia Lodge No. 1 in Victoria.

At this point we do not know a lot about him. The 1902 Victoria City Directory shows : Rostein, Joseph sec. Victoria Transfer Co. Ltd. h 40 Work” The 1903 Victoria City Directory shows his home as 51 South Turner (on the north side between Niagara Street and Rithet Avenue) in Victoria James Bay district.

We believe that he was the “J. Rostein” listed as one of builders and owners of the Rostein Building, now the Metropolitan Building, which was built in 1903 and still stands at 605 Courtney Street, at the south east corner of Government Street and Courtney Street in downtown Victoria. The other builder of the Rostein Building was Louis Rostein, presumably Joseph Rostein’s brother. He is shown in the 1903 Victoria City Directory as “Rostein, L.H. of L.H. Rostein & Co., commission merchants, 111 Government Street”

111 Government Street was on the east side of Government Street between Yates Street and Johnson Street and was primarily occupied by “Dixi H. Ross, grocers & liquors” It seems likely that Louis Rostein was renting office space at 111 Government Street from “Dixi H. Ross, grocers & liquors”
